Comedy Genius: Melissa McCarthy

Melissa McCarthy became the first woman to receive MTV's Comedic Genius Award on Sunday.

After crowd-surfing to the stage, she accepted the award from hosts Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart (who she called "Mr. Rock Johnson" and "The Rock's assistant").

McCarthy thanked the female comedians who inspired her, including SNL's Jane Curtin, Lucille Ball, Phyllis Diller and Whoopi Goldberg. She also thanked her mother, who she said taught her to "not to fear being the butt of the joke" and to "lovingly go for the kill."

Though she was the first woman to win the award, "I am certainly not the first one to deserve it," she told the crowd on the Warner Bros. lot. McCarthy also thanked "every single person who buys a ticket for one my movies or watches my shows," for being the reason she can keep doing what she loves.

And on a possibly political note, she ended her speech, saying "Who knew Bruce Springsteen could get even cooler?" The note to her fellow Boss was a possible nod to the performer's recent decision to cancel his concert in North Carolina in response to the state's legislation that has been accused of being anti-gay.

The Boss star has a busy schedule this year. She stars in this summer's Ghostbusters reboot and recently revealed that she's returning to Netflix's Gilmore Girls revival.

The MTV Movie Awards, hosted by Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson, aired Sunday, April 10 on MTV. Hart won the Comedic Genius Award in 2015.

MTV Movie Awards: Melissa McCarthy receives Comedic Genius Award

BEST: Kendall Jenner rocked this all-black look that showed off her incredible legs in extremely strap-y heels. We love the sleek hair and black rings, as well.

WORST: Charlize Theron was on-trend in this lacy black dress that showed off her black panties. Between the overstuffed shoulders, the embroidered neckline and the severely slicked-back hair, it was all a bit too much for us.

WORST: "Pitch Perfect 2" star Rebel Wilson missed the mark in this black dress with a sheer shoulder and red piping on the cleavage.

BEST: "Jurassic World" leading man Chris Pratt looks fantastic in this casual all-blue look. It's a nice, sleek play on the Canadian tuxedo look that seems to be catching on these days.

WORST: "Teen Mom" alum Farrah Abraham almost got it right in this sparkling black and gold gown that put all of her curves on display, but it didn't all come together for us.

BEST: Model Cara Delevingne looked fierce in this black jumpsuit with cutouts on the top. We loved the unique look and her neutral lip color to boot.

BEST: The winner of the Comic Genius award, Melissa McCarthy, stunned in her sleek black get-up on the way to the stage.

WORST: We're not quite sure what was going on with Emilia Clarke's look -- between the dress covered in women's faces and the light pink clutch, it was all a bit all over the place.

WORST: Model Gigi Hadid debuted a brand new tousled hairstyle -- and bangs -- on the red carpet to complement her pin striped suit, and it proved to be a rare miss for her.

BEST: Lizzy Caplan continued the all-black trend of the night in this unique gown with a sheer bottom. It was the perfect combination of sleek, sexy and a little something unexpected.

WORST: Actress Kat Graham hit the red carpet in this lace-up pink dress that just didn't seem to fit her in the right places. While the color looked nice, the fit of the dress just didn't seem to work.

WORST: Singer Halsey sauntered down the red carpet in this sparkling salmon three-piece. Though the jacket was incredible, the rest of the look was a bit too much for us.
