Family Shocked by Graphic Details in Murder of Indiana 1-Year-Old

SPENCER, Ind. (WPIX) - New, graphic details were released Monday in the death of 15-month-old Spencer toddler Shaylyn Ammerman, as prosecutors file charges against the man police believe is responsible.

Kyle Parker pleaded not guilty in an Owen County courtroom Monday to charges of murder, rape, child molesting, strangulation, and more. Court records show Parker confessed to his stepfather that he killed Shaylyn and acted alone.

Prosecutors said he smothered Shaylyn's mouth and nose to keep her from screaming and then strangled the 1-year-old. The doctor who examined Shaylyn after her death called it the worst case of sexual trauma she had ever seen.

"The gravity of a case like this. You've got monstrous allegations. This is something law enforcement shouldn't have to deal with. These types of allegations are just atrocious," said Donald VanDerMoere, Owen County Prosecutor.

Baby Shaylyn's father and grandmother said they simply can't wrap their minds around the disturbing and disgusting allegations against Kyle Parker.

And neither can others who'd interacted with the 22-year-old, including a woman who said Parker came to her home after he killed the little girl.

"There's just so many emotions that you can't even put a finger on what emotion you're feeling. One minute you're disgusted, then you're angry," said Tamera Morgan, Shaylyn's grandmother.

Sadness turned to frustration for Morgan and other family members in learning the suffering her 15-month-old granddaughter went through, investigators say, at the hands of Kyle Parker.

"We didn't want to hear she was hurt," she said, "You have to be a really demented psychopath to hurt a baby."

Friday, police said they didn't have probable cause to charge Parker with murder.

But that changed over the weekend, according to court documents, when Parker confessed in jail to his stepfather Sunday night, who then told investigators.

Parker said he took Shaylyn from the Spencer home, where he and family members had been drinking. Parker said he pulled over and raped the 15-month-old child along the way to Gosport, and then he smothered her, dumping her body in a wooded area, while using bleach to try and conceal evidence.

"I wish I had never let him in my house. It goes to show you don't really know who people are," said Tina Wagoner.

Wagoner said Parker showed up around 3:30 that morning at her Gosport home, where he'd lived before but didn't currently reside. She said Parker was painting a garage for them as a side job.

She and her husband were already up for work and found Parker's timing odd.

Wagoner said Parker showered there.

By that afternoon, she said state police were at her home with search warrants, as Parker's car was parked in her garage.

Court documents show Parker cleaned his car and tried to throw items away in the family's garage. Wagner said it all haunts her.

"They literally dug his car out of the garage," she said, showing the marks still left behind on the concrete, "I'm very saddened that I feel like I've had a part in this."

Baby Shaylyn's father Justin Ammerman said given the graphic details released Monday he doesn't know how he'll ever heal.

"It's beyond words," he said, "I don't know how to do that."

Prosecutors have not decided whether or not to seek the death penalty in the case.

Funeral services for Shaylyn Ammerman are planned for 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at the Christian Life Center in Spencer. Visitation is planned for 3 p.m. up until the time of the service.

A private burial will be held at Chambersville Cemetery, also in Spencer.
