Research has shown that it could, according to a recent CNN report.

The article cites a 2015 study led by University of Southern California (USC) that showed other health benefits to the practice like a reduction in belly fat and increase in stem cells. The trial on humans involved five straight days of calorie reductions each month; the first day incorporated 1,000 calories and the remainder involved 725 calories each.

However, the paper's lead author, Valter Longo, emphasizes that "it's not just about reducing calories.
