Disturbing Discovery Made on Popular Hiking Trail in California

KTLA -- Hiking trails leading to Echo Mountain above Altadena were closed Monday after possible human remains were found in the area the day before.

Authorities received a call about 8:40 p.m. Sunday from someone reporting the discovery, said Deputy Barraza with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Barraza confirmed that bones were found in the area, but could not say if they were human bones.

Video showed authorities putting up crime scene tape about 1 a.m. at the Cobb Estate gate leading to Sam Merrill Trail.

The popular hiking trail would remain closed on Monday due to the discovery of possible human remains, said Sgt. Ganaral, of the Sheriff's Department.

The bones appeared to be from a leg, Deputy Jonathan Lested told the Los Angeles Times.

A deputy in a patrol vehicle could be seen outside the gate leading to the trails in order to keep hikers out of the area.

The investigation was taking place about one mile off of Mt. Lowe Road on Echo Mountain, Barraza said.
