Thousands don loincloths to battle at Japanese festival

Updated

Thousands of men were fitted into loincloths at the Hadaka Matsuri, or Naked Festival at Saidaiji Temple on Saturday in Okayama, Japan.

The nearly naked 9,000 men battled to grab a pair of lucky sticks thrown by priests in one of the most vibrant festivals in Japan.

Often resulting in injuries, the men cram together into the temple and later pounce on the sacred talismans, believing the winner will receive a year of health, wealth and prosperity.
