(WPIX) A San Francisco teen who said he was hit with a shocking bill is now suing Apple, claiming his iPhone's new Wi-Fi Assist feature left him with thousands in data charges.
In theory, Wi-Fi Assist should save data -- it automatically switches to Wi-Fi when the device is in range -- but Ashton Finegold says the opposite happened.
Finegold's room is in a part of the house with weak Wi-Fi signal, and, unbeknownst him, his phone apparently munched through 144 GB of data while he thought he was connected to the family Wi-Fi.
Then, the bill came. "My dad is going to kill me," was the first thing Finegold thought when he saw the total -- $2,021.07.
Finegold's father Jeff told CBS, "It's usually $250 a month –– and this was over $2,000."
Finegold isn't the only one complaining about the new feature that's part of Apple's IOS 9 update. In October, attorneys filed a $5 million class-action lawsuit against the Silicon Valley giant on behalf of others who say they overshot their data limits thanks to Wi-Fi Assist.
For those who live in spotty-signal areas, Wi-Fi Assist can be disabled by going to "Settings," then "Cellular" and scroll down to the bottom to turn off Wi-Fi Assist.
