Woman Tries Avoid Arrest By Pretending To Go Into Labor: Police

SOUTHBURY (WTIC) –A police response to a shoplifting incident at Southbury Plaza turned into a much stranger arrest.

On December 23, Southbury Police responded to the Kmart located at 100 Main St. after store employees reported a shoplifting in progress.

Police spoke to security and then approached the suspect, Giovanni Torcasio, 33, of Danbury. When officers escorted him to his car in the parking lot, they found $286.83 worth of stolen goods in his back seat.

Torcasio was shopping with his fiance, Denajia Bishop, 27, of New Fairfield, who had a warrant out for her arrest for larceny in the first degree/welfare fraud.

When officers informed Bishop of the warrant, she said she was pregnant and claimed she was going into labor. She was taken to Danbury Hospital, where doctors found $91 worth of stolen merchandise under her sweatshirt, which gave the illusion that she was pregnant. Bishop is not pregnant, and claims Torcasio told her to hide the items when he saw police approaching the store.

Torcasio was charged with larceny in the sixth degree, and bond was set at $1,000 bond. He'll appear in court on January 5.

Bishop was charged with larceny in the sixth degree, as well as the charges from the warrant. Bond was set at $11,000, and she'll appear in court on January 5 for the new charges, and January 12 for the old charges.
