Star Wars captivated the world in 1977 with the release of the first film. Toys flew off the shelves that Christmas and many more to come. The franchise shows no signs of slowing down with this years The Force Awakens already selling out theaters around the country months before the release.

The seemingly simple puzzle toy was a must have for people of all ages in 1980 selling close to 5 million units that year. The puzzle continues to have a cult following, with people who can figure it out in 30 seconds or less!

Cabbage Patch Kid dolls caused a complete frenzy at stores in December 1983 when every parent tried to get their hands on one. The adorable dimpled dolls came complete with an 'adoption certificate' and their own names. The ubiquitous toys are still manufactured in 2015.

From first glance Teddy Ruxpin looks like your run-of-the-mill teddy bear. This super futuristic toy (for 1985) spoke to kids and read along with special Teddy Ruxpin storybooks. Although this teddy is now a relic of the 80's, electronic toys still are going strong, many of them equipped with iOS apps.

As with virtually all of Nintendo's big releases the original Game Boy was an instant hit. It was one of the first handheld gaming systems paving the way for the future. Today you will find kids playing their favorite game on an iPad or iPhone.

Barney and Friends burst onto the children's television circuit in 1992 to rave reviews. By Christmastime every kid absolutely needed a Barney plush, resulting in them selling out of every toy store.

After appearing on Rosie O'Donnell's wildly popular talk show, Tickle Me Elmo became the most sought after toy for Christmas 1996 driving people to fight, get arrested and scalp the toy for thousands of dollars.

Beanie Baby toys topped every Christmas list in 1997 at the height of their popularity. The discontinued toys were fetching thousands and creating a total frenzy. Although Beanie Babies are still made today they do not have the same cult following as in 1997.

The tiny Japanese handheld toy became wildly popular in the late 90's. Kids could not wait to "take care" of their new virtual pets. They became a status symbol with only the coolest kids having more than one hanging from their backpacks.

Furby, an adorable talking alien-like creature flew off the shelves in December 1998, they also began being resold on the internet. Furbies are still made today with updated technology.

December 2000, although being the end of the first year of the new millennium, kids went back to basics with the Razor scooter, the simple folding scooter came in various candy colors and were the chosen form of transportation for school age kids.

The original XBox was released in 2001 as one of the most advanced gaming systems on the market which of course had it topping all Christmas lists.

Hoverboards are the item of the moment with everyone wanting the sleek futuristic looking scooter. Although super trendy, hoverboards are illegal to ride in my areas including New York City and people have had problems with the boards actually exploding.
