Teacher asks 13-year-old Muslim student if she has a bomb in her backpack

The parents of a 13-year-old Muslim girl were outraged this week when they learned their daughter's teacher asked if the teen had a bomb in her bag.

Abdirizak Aden of Gwinnett County, Georgia told INSIDE EDITION his daughter, who wears a hijab, was stopped by her teacher, who asked what was in her bag.

When the girl failed to respond, the teacher asked if there was a bomb in the backpack, Aden said. According to the girl, the teacher quickly apologized.

However, Somalia-born Aden went to the school fuming nonetheless. He said there's no excuse for the comment, whether it was a joke or not.

"When you grow up, you have to know what you're doing," Aden said of the teacher. "It's not funny."

As for why the teacher made the comment, Aden said he's stumped. "I dont know why it happened. The teacher has to tell us."

Aden, a truck driver who runs his own grocery business, said he's lived in the Atlanta area for 25 years and this is the first time he's ever encountered this kind of Islamophobia.

Going forward, Aden said he's not entirely sure what to do but said "I have to do something."

Whether that something will be a transfer to a different school for his daughter is up to the girl, he said.

Meanwhile, school principal Eli Welch III conducted an investigation into the incident, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and has apologized on behalf of the school.

"The remark was not appropriate, but based on their conversation and investigation," school officials don't believe it was made with "ill intent," Roach told the AJC.
