After the horrific events that took place in Paris on November 13th, there has been much speculation about a PlayStation 4 found in the raids that security forces extended to Belgium. Earlier in the week, Belgium's Interior Minister Jan Jambon linked ISIS to the PlayStation network.

It's very, very difficult for our services - not only Belgian services but international services - to decrypt the communication that is done via PlayStation 4." type="quote" author="Jan Jambon" authordesc=" Belgium's interior minister" isquoteoftheday="false"%

Despite the connection Jambon made, The Telegraph points out that most communication security questions have centered around smartphones, messaging and social media apps. There is a variety of technologies people can use to communicate over the Internet, and PlayStation is one of them. The fact that a PS4 was found in the raid does not necessarily mean that it was used to plan the attacks since, as Mashable states, there is no evidence that such connection applies.

This does not, of course, exclude that the PlayStation could be used for encrypted communications through its chat feature that, contrarily to what Jamon mentions, is also accessible from PS3, PlayStation Vita and a smartphone app. As Mashable argues, it is not harder to monitor communication over the PlayStation Network then over other channels, but, since it was unexpected, less effort has been put in place to monitor it.
