STOKES COUNTY, N.C. -- A dog is recovering in foster care after being thrown from the window of a passing car.

"Just tossed him right out," said Chandra Gilham, who witnessed the event. "Once they saw he was so close to the road they got out and kicked him trying to get him to get away."

Gilham says it happened just before noon Thursday in front of her family's home on Trinity Church Road near King. She and her mother ran to rescue the mixed breed dog that was underweight. "You literally could just hold your hands around his waist, you can count his ribs."

The dog is now in foster care and being seen by a veterinarian.
