Man Arrested During Traffic Stop For Stabbing Of Spencer Stone

Sacramento Police announced Wednesday that they have made an arrest in the October stabbing of Spencer Stone.

Officers arrested James Tran, 28, of Sacramento around 7 a.m. Wednesday during a traffic stop near Highway 99 and Bond Road.

Police Chief Sam Somers said during a Wednesday afternoon media briefing that some type of dispute between Tran's friends and Stone's escalated to a fight and stabbing. Somers said others were involved, but believes Tran was the man that actually stabbed Stone.

According to Sacramento police Chief Sam Somers, detectives have had Tran on their radar for a while, thanks to tips from the public.

"And they stepped up in this manner and provided information to our detectives," the chief said.

Stone, one of the Sacramento natives credited with helping stop a mass shooting aboard a Paris-bound train in August, was stabbed in midtown Sacramento after leaving a nightclub on Oct. 8.

Investigators say a fight with a group of men preceded the stabbing.

Stone was hospitalized with serious injuries for several days.

"It's crazy. I didn't think that he would do that, really," said a neighbor of Tran's, Sang Syriphone said.

Tran is no stranger to Sacramento police.

He was arrested back in 2007 on various weapons and drug charges, investigators say he also has gang ties.
