LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Los Angeles Fire Department says eight people were injured early Sunday morning when a truck plowed into a crowded downtown sidewalk.

The department says that three of those hurt suffered critical injuries.

Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey told KNBC that the crash took place just after 1:40 a.m. in the intersection of Spring Street and 7th Street.

KNBC reports that witnesses at the scene said a car was trying to make a left turn from Spring Street onto 7th Street when a U-Haul box truck traveling at a high rate of speed hit the car before it plowed into the sidewalk, taking out a hydrant and a light post.
