The campus of North Carolina Central University was briefly on lockdown late Sunday as police sought an "active shooter," the college said.

The college issued an emergency alert saying there had been "active gunfire" about 11:15 p.m. ET. The lockdown was lifted about 11:50 p.m., but the school called the investigation into the shooting "active."

One student was transported to a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury in the shooting on campus around 11:00 p.m. ET. The shooter hadn't been apprehended, Durham police told NBC station WNCN of Raleigh.

No further details were immediately available.
