Wait, Why Were There No Cell Phones in 'Back To The Future: Part II'?

Ishita Singh, HuffPost Live

October 21, 2015 is the day that Marty McFly and Doc Brown famously time-travel to in 1989's 'Back to the Future II.' The movie offers an interesting version of the future, one with hoverboards, flying cars and seriously weird hairstyles.

But missing from director Robert Zemeckis's vision of 2015? Cell phones. Though they are ubiquitous today (and existed in 1989), they were left out of the movie. Author and futurist Michael Rogers discussed the gaffe in a segment on 'Back To The Future's accuracy in predicting the future on HuffPost Live.

Rogers posited that the movie omitted mention of cell phones because it changed the way Zemeckis would have to tell his story.

"Cell phones totally change your storytelling. So much storytelling depends on someone not knowing something in a certain time, not getting communication. We storytellers back in the late '80s were just not prepared to accept that challenge, so we sort of left that out."

Patrick George, managing editor of Jalopnik.com, added that the movie's creators probably did not foresee how many uses cellphones would have in the future.

"We did have cellphones, but they were just that -- phones. And they were expensive, they had fairly limited uses--they were pretty much just calling people--and they weren't the mobile computers that we walk around with today."
