Jim Webb drops out of Democratic presidential race, considers independent run

Former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb is dropping out of the Democratic presidential race but is still considering running as an independent candidate.

In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Webb said he was "withdrawing from any consideration of being the Democratic Party's nominee for the presidency. ... How I remain as a voice will depend on what kind of support I'm shown in the coming weeks."

Webb has been averaging just over 1 percent in recent national polls.

While Webb is weighing a possible independent bid, he's expected to take some time after Tuesday's announcement to talk with people from across the political spectrum before making a decision.

Webb has been struggling to raise cash, reporting just under $697,000 in his recent filing statement.

During the first Democratic debate last week, Webb had complained about how little time he had to answer questions.

A former Republican, Webb served as secretary of the Navy and assistant secretary of defense under President Ronald Reagan.
