Dole Recalls Spinach Because Of Possible Salmonella Contamination

NEW YORK (WPIX) -- Spinach sold by Dole is being recalled because it may be tainted with salmonella, the company said this week.

The recalled leafy greens are marked with an Enjoy By date of Oct. 15, codes A27409B and A27409A, and UPC 7143000976, Dole said.

Bags of the spinach were sold in these 13 states:

No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall, which was initiated when a sample of Dole Spinach salad tested positive for salmonella in a random sampling conducted by the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, Dole said.

Baby spinach and other Dole-bagged salads are not included in the recall, the company said.

"Dole Fresh Vegetables customer service representatives are already contacting retailers and are in the process of confirming that the recalled product is being removed from the stream of commerce," the company said in a statement.

Customers who have the recalled spinach in their fridge are urged not to eat it, and instead throw away any remaining product.

Symptoms of salmonella include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Most patients recover within a few days but the bacterium can be serious or even deadly for young children, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems.
