Study: Effects Of Permafrost Melt Estimated To Cost $43 Trillion by 2200

Melting permafrost may be the result of warming global temperatures, but it will likely have real economic consequences.

According to a recent study, when the greenhouse gases that are trapped in the permafrost are released due to melt, the world economy is expected to sustain an additional $43 trillion in damage by 2200.

This figure includes costs related to things like reduced agricultural activity and increased health care expenses which are expected to result from these environmental changes based on current trends.

It is believed that the world's cumulative permafrost contains up to twice the amount of carbon that is currently in the atmosphere due to encased plant materials that never fully broke down.

As the warming Arctic causes the frozen earth to start melting, the stored gases get released into the atmosphere, causing global temperatures to rise even faster.

Based on their findings, researchers are urging action to slow the rate of permafrost melt in order to mitigate these environmental and economic consequences.

This $43 trillion figure is on top of the $326 trillion that has already been predicted for costs related to climate change, bringing the total to $369 trillion by the end of next century.
