She used to be the second banana on HBO's Veep, but Julia Louis-Dreyfus slayed on on the red carpet at the Emmys Sunday night in a one-shoulder Safiyaa gown.

Her longtime makeup artist, Karen Kawahara, has worked with the actress for two decades. That's longer than most Hollywood marriages.

"She's so normal too, which is great," says Kawahara. "We talk a lot. She trusts me so much with all this time together. I'm always weighing in on the jewelry and the dress and the hair. She's gotten a lot of (attention) lately, in the last eight or nine years. People notice how beautiful she is."

No kidding. Having met Louis-Dreyfus numerous times, we can attest that she's absolutely delightful in person: kind, gracious, personable and very, very funny.

Of course, getting ready for the Emmys, which made her a winner for the fourth time, is actually serious business.

"With the dress being so severe and stark, I wanted to her makeup where her eyes stood out and it was fresh and young. Just very clean," says Kawahara.

Here's how it goes down on Sunday night. To be close to the venue, and to avoid hellacious LA traffic, Louis-Dreyfus arrives at a downtown hotel in yoga pants and a T-shirt. First, she gets her nails done. Then, it's time for hair.

"We look at the dress and talk about ideas. We sit down and start working and transforms into what it's going to be. We're huge fans of La Prairie so we were so excited to have these products. She uses them on a regular basis. She's mentioned it in these magazines. We've had product placement on Veep," says Kawahara. "Now because of social media, we'll do selfies and that makes it fun. Once you see the look put together, now it's amazing."
