Emmy Awards history: A look back in photographs

Updated

Our favorite time of year has finally arrived and we are excited to kick off award season with the Emmys! Let's take a look back through the history of the Television Academy's most prestigious award show.

The Emmy Awards were conceived in 1948 by the Television Academy and the name for the famous statuette derived from former Academy president Harry Lubcke's suggestion of "Immy," a nickname for the image-orthicon camera tube instrumental in the technical development of television. "Immy" was then feminized as "Emmy" to match the female statuette depicting the winged "muse of art uplifting the electron of science."

The first Emmy Awards were broadcast on January 25, 1949, when less than 1 million television sets existed in the Unites States and only six awards were given. Check out the gallery to see amazing moments from the Emmy's since 1949.
