On Friday September 4, 8-year-old James Rice was hit by a school bus and rushed to the hospital. A week later on September 11, the second-grader died.

Rice's aunt, Wanda Gant, said that Rice died at 9:15 AM Friday morning at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Gant said:

"We would like to thank everyone for the prayers and support for James. We're devastated by his loss and we ask for everyone to continue to pray for our family and to please respect our privacy as we grieve."
