In the evening of August 27th, 1965, The Beatles and Elvis Presley met for the first and only time. Today marks the 50th anniversary of that iconic meeting of the world's biggest music stars.

The Beatles had a day off from their U.S. tour and took the night off to visit Elvis Presley at his Beverly Hills mansion. Upon meeting the group of musicians took time to chat which eventually led to an impropmtu playing session.

Their meeting was extremely private. Unfortunately no photos exist from the event.

The back story, as reported by the L.A. Times: Elvis and Priscilla, who was just his girlfriend at the time, welcomed the Beatles at the door of their home. As intros were conducted between the Beatles and Presley, the group moved to a small den, which was equipped with a large TV, a stereo system and a bar. As everyone found a place, there was somewhat of an awkward silence. The two greatest rock-n-roll acts in the world were finally together, with nothing to say ... or so it seemed.

"With the mood loosened up, the gathering turned into a friendly, free-flowing affair. Colonel Parker and Esposito oversaw the action at a craps table and roulette wheel that had been set up in the home’s larger den, while Schilling teamed with Ringo to take on Evans and Elvis’ cousin Billy Smith in a game of pool. Elvis wasn't a drinker, so very little alcohol was served (though George Harrison slipped out to the swimming pool area, where he smoked pot with hairstylist Larry Geller and Mafia member Alan Fortas)."

The group of them did make some music, however, it never surfaced. The Beatles did offer to return the favor, by inviting Elvis and his guys over to their place to spend more time together.

The encounter lives on as one of the most iconic events in rock-n-roll history.
