When a family heard 16-year-old Neysi Perez moving inside the coffin they had placed her in upon what they thought was her death, they smashed their way into the tomb to break open the wooden casket.

Shocking footage shows the family breaking through the concrete tomb using a sledgehammer before pulling Perez out of the coffin and attempting to revive her. The relatives claimed that the tips of Perez's fingers were bruised and that the viewing window on her coffin had been smashed.

Despite efforts to revive the young woman, the family found no signs of life and later returned her to the cemetery to be reburied. Perez was three months pregnant when she collapsed outside her home in La Entrada, Western Honduras.

It was believed that the young woman had a severe panic attack after hearing gunfire near her home. The teenager's religious parents believed that their daughter had become possessed by an evil spirit when she started foaming at the mouth after collapsing.

Therefore, the parents called a priest who tried to exorcise the young woman. She eventually became lifeless and was declared dead three hours later at the hospital. She was buried in the wedding dress she wore to get married.

A day after the funeral, Perez's husband Rudy Gonzales was visiting his late wife's grave when he heard banging and muffled screams from inside the tomb. He told local TV news Primer Impacto:

"As I put my hand on her grave I could hear noises inside. I heard banging, then I heard her voice. She was screaming for help. It had already been a day since we buried her. I couldn't believe it. I was ecstatic, full of hope."

Cemetery worker Jesus Villanueva also claims to have heard noises coming from the teen's grave. He said:

"I convinced myself that the screams were coming from somewhere else. I never imagined that there was someone alive in there. That afternoon the girl's husband came to me begging me to get her out because she was alive. He was hysterical. The family were soon here and started breaking through the tomb, shouting her name."

Once the family broke through the tomb, Perez was taken by truck to the nearest hospital. She was carried into the hospital while still inside her coffin. Unfortunately, all tests the medics carried out showed that the girl was clinically dead. Her cousin, Carolina Perez, said:

"Once we had taken her out of the tomb I put my hand on her body. She was still warm, and I felt a faint heart beat. She had scratches on her forehead and bruises on her fingers. It looked like she had tried desperately to get out of the casket and hurt herself."

Doctors believe that Perez may have suffered a panic attack that temporarily stopped her heart activity. It could have also been a cataplexy attack which made her temporary lose voluntary muscle function.

It is believed that the girl may have been accidentally buried alive and then died from lack of oxygen after waking up inside the coffin.

This isn't the first time a person has woken up after being declared dead. Watch this video to see how it happened before:
