Lonely Planet's Top Ten Must-See-And-Experience Destinations

Lonely Planet has been around the block -- and now, after forty years of travel reports, it has narrowed down its must-see destinations to a mere 500.

Get your luggage and passports ready. Here's the top ten from their list.

Number one takes us to the temples of Angkor Wat. A sprawling metropolis of sandstone fusing heaven and earth, Hinduism and Buddhism in the jungles of northern Cambodia.

Number two is the Great Barrier Reef -- over 1,800 miles of coral off the northeastern coast of Australia. Climate change is destroying the reef, so get there as fast as you can.

Number three sits alone atop the Andes Mountains. Machu Picchu, Peru, is an astonishing site to behold and what Lonely Planet calls "a proper enigma."

Number four can't actually be seen from space, but the Great Wall of China is no worse for the wear of myth. The serpentine 5,500 mile stretch is an absolute must.

Number five brings us to Agra, India -- site of the Taj Mahal. A coruscating collection of white marble, gem stones and stunning symmetry.

Number six is set deep in the Arizona desert. Literally. The 277-mile long, one-mile deep Grand Canyon is an iconic image of the American West that's grand indeed.

Number seven is the Roman Colosseum. The 50,000-seat amphitheater extols the staying power of power itself.

Number eight is the Iguazú Falls residing in both Brazil and Argentina. Perhaps no surprise since the name literally means Big Water.

Number nine is Alhambra in Granada, Spain. Widely considered one of the most sophisticated examples of Islamic architecture on the planet.

Rounding out the list at number 10 is Ayasofya (Hagia Sophia) in Istanbul, Turkey. The 1,500-year-old marvel has functioned as a church and a mosque, and now stands as a museum.
