A Good Samaritan had found him wandering the streets of Raleigh and took him to the Banfield Pet Hospital, where staff scanned his microchip and contacted the family.

"There are simply no words to describe what we felt when we got that phone call. We were in complete disbelief. Once that brief second had passed, we were all crying. We were frantic with excitement and gratitude," the couple told People magazine.

Zeus had heartworm and couldn't fly back to his family so someone from the hospital offered to drive him the 3,000 miles home.
