NY Inmates Claim Guards Abused Them After Matt, Sweat Escape

The New York prison where inmates Richard Matt and David Sweat escaped in June is back in the headlines after more than 60 inmates claim they suffered abuse at the hands of officers following the prison break.

According to The New York Times, many inmates at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora who knew Matt and Sweat claim that they were physically abused during interrogations to find out how the two inmates escaped or where they were going. Some say they were transferred out of the prison without due process and placed in solitary confinement.

Matt was fatally shot during the search and Sweat is in police custody. An investigation showed that no other prisoners aided in the escape — but some prison employees did.

One of the allegations the Times quotes comes from inmate Patrick Alexander, who lived in an adjoining cell. He says that one night after the escape three guards who weren't wearing name badges handcuffed him and took him to a broom closet for questioning.

It reads: "The officer jumps up and grabs me by my throat, lifts me out of the chair, slams my head into the pipe along the wall. Then he starts punching me in the face. The other two get up and start hitting me also in the ribs and stomach."

Other inmates described similar interrogations.

The Department of Corrections says it wants a full investigation into the claims, saying, "any findings of misconduct or abuse against inmates will be punished to the full extent of the law."
