The top 10 Republicans who made the cut for Thursday's leadoff debate of the 2016 presidential race were announced on Tuesday, and top of the list was billionaire businessman Donald Trump.

2. Slain officer remembered
Sean Bolton, the 33-year-old police officer who was shot and killed Saturday night during a struggle with an ex-convict, was remembered by friends Tuesday as a strong, protective man who avoided confrontation whenever possible.

3. Top Taliban member steps down
One of the Taliban's top officials resigned Tuesday as tension and the possibility of a split grows within the group following the appointment of a new leader last week.

4. Blagojevich speaks out
Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich issued his first statement from prison Tuesday after he asked a full federal appeals court to rehear his corruption case.

5. Large algae bloom worse than scientists thought
A toxic algae bloom off the West Coast is denser and deeper than scientists thought, and prompted shellfish managers on Tuesday to double the area off Washington's coast that is closed to Dungeness crab fishing.
