INDIANAPOLIS, In. (FOX 59) -– Millions of Americans struggle with extra submental fat, more commonly known as a double chin. Now, a brand new procedure offered in Indiana can get rid of a double chin without surgery.

Geoff Goad, 36, is self-conscious about the extra skin underneath his jaw.

"It`s more in pictures than anything and when I see the pictures after it is taken and the the double chin and the line across here," said Goad.

Goad is working with Doctor Gregory Chernoff, one of the first plastic surgeons in Indiana to offer the new procedure called Kybella.

"I want to do something. I want to get rid of this double chin," said Goad.

Kybella is the first FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment for fat underneath the chin.

"A double chin can make many patients feel or look older than they already are," said Dr. Gregory Chernoff.

The treatment is administered as a series of injections.

The 15-minute procedure can erase Goad's double chin without him ever going under the knife.

"Because Kybella destroys fat cells once the desired result is achieved re-injection is not expected for these patients. There is a semblance of permanence without surgery that we never had before," explained Dr. Chernoff.

The cost for Kybella is based on patient size and the amount of the drug the doctor needs to use.

Goad, for example, will likely need three treatments.

"In the FDA study, the highest amount of stratification was found after a second treatment," explained Dr. Chernoff.

The average cost for Kybella is between $750 to $1500 a session.
