Man Missing For 43 Years Found Dead Inside Car At Bottom Of Lake

A man missing for 43 years was found dead at the bottom of Lake Rhodhiss in Caldwell County, North Carolina earlier this week.

Amos Shook was reported missing in February of 1972 but the case stalled out for decades. Shook's daughter recently approached the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office asking them to re-open the case, but most of the older files were gone.

Still, revisiting leads developed from the 1972 cold case led investigators to the boat access ramp of the lake and using advanced sonar technology, Shook's 1968 green Pontiac Catalina was located 30 feet underwater by the North Catawba Fire and Rescue Dive Team.

Once the car was pulled from the water, investigators discovered human remains and an ID inside, which led them to identify Shook.

"I've waited and waited for this. It's emotional and a relief," said Pamela Shook Kolbe, the daughter who requested the case be re-opened.

Questions remain about how Shook's car came to be at the bottom of the lake. Investigators do not suspect foul play or suicide at this stage of the investigation.
