Whoopi Goldberg replies to Bill Cosby controversy: 'My real life is more upsetting'

Whoopi Goldberg is facing a growing backlash over her continuing defense of Bill Cosby.

On his HBO show Sunday night, comedian John Oliver blasted Goldberg for her long history of defending notorious celebrities. On the show, he highlighted "ten surprising things" Goldberg has defended, including Bill Cosby, Roman Polanski and Ray Rice.

On The View on Monday, an emotional Goldberg indirectly referenced the criticism while speaking about her brother, who died two months ago.

Goldberg said: "If I don't get onboard with a lot of stuff that is upsetting people, understand that my real life is much more upsetting than stuff that is happening outside."

INSIDE EDITION asked comedian Michelle Collins -- who was just announced as a new co-host on The View-- about Goldberg under fire. "The greatest part about working with Whoopi is she's one of the greatest people. Even if our opinions aren't always eye-to-eye, or we disagree. Once the show is over, the energy is incredible."

Director Judd Apatow -- appearing on the Today show to promote his new movie, Trainwreck, is urging Goldberg to stop defending Cosby. "It certainly is time for everybody to wake up and say we should be concerned about the women," he said.

Cosby's wife of 51 years, Camille, continues to stand by him, and according to a published report, sought out advice from none other than Oprah Winfrey about whether to stay in the marriage.

"Camille still doesn't believe that Bill provided drugs and had sex with women without their consent," a family source told the New York Post. "She's well aware of his cheating, but she doesn't believe that her husband is a rapist."
