Believe it or not, the sudden spike in "nothing but Royals votes" wasn't the strangest thing to happen in the MLB's All-Star game voting this year.

Two powerhouse rosters that are typically chalk full of big-name talent, the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are absent from the All-Star starting lineups this season for the first time in All-Star game history.

Weird baseball is weird.

The Red Sox sit uncomfortably in fifth place in the American League East Division, a characteristic the organization isn't used to. Brock Holt is a first-time All-Star and the lone representative of the Red Sox.

While the Yankees top the division with a 47-40 record, the main player most were left wondering about was Alex Rodriguez, even though Brett Gardner made the team. It seems no matter what the conversation is, if you're going to mention MLB All-Star, Rodriguez's name is inevitably brought up, and not necessarily for good measure.

According to CBS Sports, A-Rod finished fifth in All-Star voting among designated hitters.

Let me see the numbers...

This season with the Yankees, Rodriguez has tallied a .279 batting average, 50 RBI and 80 hits, including 18 home runs.

While he isn't having a Josh Donaldson-esque season, A-Rod is certainly having a season that could be defined as All-Star worthy. But, Biogenesis scandals tend to make you a fan "not favorite."

The All-Star game is set to take place July 14 in Cincinnati at Great American Ballpark. You and I, along with A-Rod, will be watching it from home.
