Regis Philbin is emerging from semi-retirement to join NBC's Today. Philbin, who left his gig on ABC's Live! in 2011, joins the Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb-hosted fourth hour of Today as a contributor. The announcement came Thursday morning on the program.

The news reunites Philbin and Gifford, who co-hosted Live! for 15 years until Gifford left in 2001. Philbin, who turns 84 in August, has been something of a regular presence on Today over the last several months including starring inToday the Musical. But naming him a contributor formalizes his role at a time when co-host Kotbe is spending considerable time filling in for vacationing anchors on the flagship portion of the morning broadcast.

"Regis brings his legendary charm and humor each time he visits Today," Tammy Filler, co-executive producer of Today, said in a statement. "His energy is infectious, and when Regis is around, you never know what will happen."
