(SAN DIEGO, Ca.) — As thousands of fans flock to southern California for the annual Comic-Con, one man is taking an emotional journey.

KGTV reports Kevin Doyle, a Star Wars fanatic, is walking 645 miles dressed as a Stormtrooper.

Doyle says the love of his life, Eileen, was a self-proclaimed geek and loved Star Wars.

"R2-D2 was our ring bearer," Doyle told the station.

The two artists were married for a year when Eileen was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She died on November 7, 2012 at age 45.

"I don't feel like I've gotten to November 8th, I've been stuck on November 7th," Doyle told KGTV.

Doyle says this journey is a major step forward, and a way for him to fulfill a promise.

"I said 'I'm not going to let your memory die.'"

He left Petaluma, north of San Francisco, on June 6, and expects to arrive in San Diego on July 9.

Doyle says he also plans to walk back home after convention.
