Born in Hawaii

Though she holds an Australian accent, Kidman was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1967 to Australian parents: nursing instructor mother Janelle Ann and biochemist and clinical psychologist father Antony David Kidman. Shortly following her birth, Kidman's parents moved the family to Washington D.C. before relocating back to her parents' homeland of Australia three years later, where she grew up.

High School Dropout

Kidman was involved in the arts from a young age, participating in ballet and school plays from early adolescence. The actress chose to drop out of high school and pursue acting full-time, and landed her first film role at the age of 16.

Mother of Four

In the actress' first marriage to fellow actor Tom Cruise, the couple adopted two children together: son, Connor Cruise, and daughter, Isabella Jane Cruise. After divorcing, Kidman later married Urban and has since had two biological daughters with the singer: Faith Margaret Kidman Urban and Sunday Rose Kidman Urban.

UN Women Goodwill Ambassador

In 2006, Kidman was appointed a United Nation's Goodwill Ambassador. "Her efforts are geared towards raising awareness on the infringement of women's human rights around the world, with a particular focus on putting a spotlight on violence against women, probably the most pervasive human rights violation that affects as many as 1 in every 3 women," according to the UN Women website.

She told the organization, "Working with UN Women, I have met women who had to overcome enormous obstacles, yet who went on to help others and organize to achieve social change. To me, these women embody resilience, strength, dignity-;and hope."

First Australian Best Actress Oscar Winner

Not only is the actress a three-time Oscar nominee, she is the first Australian (the actress has dual citizenship in the U.S. and Australia) actress to win a best actress Oscar. Kidman took home the 2003 gold statuette for her leading lady performance in The Hours.
