Astronaut Sets Record For Longest Space Mission Ever Performed By Woman

A new space mission record has been set, and it's for endurance.

Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti has become the titleholder for longest single space mission ever performed by a woman.

She bypassed the previous record on June 6, when her time at the International Space Station hit 194 days, 18 hours and just over two minutes.

The new record wasn't something she'd anticipated.

She was supposed to return weeks ago, but plans changed when the Russian cargo ship headed for the station malfunctioned and later launches were delayed.

Cristoforetti is expected to return to Earth on June 11, and by that time she will have spent a few hours shy of 200 days at the research facility.
