The Rolling Stones return to a classic cover they put down 49 years ago

The slightly more polished (and definitely more sober) cousin of the Kingsmen's "Louie Louie," the McCoys' version of "Hang On Sloopy" remains one of the definitive early 60s frat rock classics.

A No. 1 hit on the Hot 100 for the McCoys in 1965, the song was also performed in concert around the same time by the Strangeloves ("I Want Candy") and a very fresh-faced band called the Rolling Stones. According to Rolling Stone magazine, the band covered the song about a dozen times in 1966 before retiring it -- until this weekend.

Forty-nine years after laying Sloopy down, the Stones picked her back up in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday night, performing the sing-along classic that was named the state's official rock song in 1985.
