Sassy senior's yearbook quote about the dress code goes viral

High school senior yearbook quotes often express hopes for the future, but for one graduate, it was all about confronting sexism.

Chloe Cross of San Mateo High School in California shared her yearbook photo on Instagram: "I would just like to apologize to those who were unable to graduate with the class of 2015 because they were too distracted by my midriff and consequently failed all of their classes! xoxo"

Cross says her sarcastic and fake apology actually carries a serious message. In a Facebook status from October, she explains she was sent home for wearing a tank top and shorts.

She says, "the enforcement of the dresscode is embarrassingly inconsistent. The fact that I can be sent home and forced to miss class due to the amount of skin I'm showing proves that any boy's education is more important than mine... I should be allowed to learn and not be accused of being a distraction just because I have long legs and it's hot outside."

She recently told Yahoo! Canada that her criticism doesn't stop with her school.

"I was truly trying to get a message across about sexism in my school (and others) and how genuinely stupid I find the (sic) defence of the dress code to be... I wanted to emphasize how stupid it sounds to blame the way that people, especially girls, dress for the academic failure of their peers. Nobody from my class would be going to college if bodies were as distracting as the administration makes them out to be."

Cross also posted her yearbook photo to Tumblr and "Hunger Games" actress Amandla Stenberg reblogged it, sending her sassy shot across the Internet.

And the support keeps on coming.

On Twitter, Caterina Lazzara said, "Chloe Cross made me want to come clean, so ... sorry if my shoulders made you fail math. Really, my bad."

And a HuffPost commenter from Lake Washington High School said, "No one ever wonders if girls are distracted by what the guys are wearing. Women are naturally supposed to exhibit self control."

Cross isn't the first student to call out administrators over the dress code.

In August, a Canadian teen says she was publicly humiliated for wearing shorts that weren't long enough. In response, she posted fliers around the school that read, "Don't humiliate her because she is wearing shorts. It's hot outside. Instead of shaming girls for their bodies, teach boys that girls are not sexual objects."

And last month, a 17-year-old prep school student posted printed notes around campus that read, "As the summer months approach please remember .... Girls wear shorts in order to stay cool when hot, not for you."
