Controversial Logo Forces Attorney to Vacate Office

OKLAHOMA CITY —An attorney must vacate her office space near Penn Square Mall following a dispute over her logo.

Joi McClendon practices criminal law and her logo is a unique take on the skull and crossbones image. It features the scales of justice for eyes and gavels for crossbones.

"I go out there and I fight for my client's rights and I'm kind of a warrior of sorts," McClendon said. "It's just a fun logo."

The landlord of McClendon's office space inside Richmond Square, however, does not find the logo "fun."

Her landlord said she does not consider the logo a good representation of the property since the skull and crossbones traditionally symbolize death, piracy or even poison.

"It's not a picture of a naked lady," McClendon said. "I mean you've got (attorney) Chad Moody. He's got the marijuana leaf all over town and nobody's up in arms about that. I think people need to not take themselves so seriously."

McClendon said she featured the logo on her business cards for the last year but only put it on her office window last week, which prompted the eviction.

"I just think it kind of just got blown out of proportion," McClendon said. "I think it's something that could have been resolved a bit differently."

Despite the dispute, McClendon said she still considers the landlord to be a good person at heart.

She found a new office space nearby at NW 18th Street and North Classen Boulevard and has written approval to display the logo; however, she said the cost of the move will be in the thousands.
