Sam Smith and his fans can breathe a sigh of relief -- the British soul crooner's vocal cord surgery was a success.

"Sam Smith underwent vocal cord microsurgery by Dr. Steven Zeitels to stop recurrent vocal cord hemorrhage (bleeding). This condition is the result of unstable blood vessels in the vocal cord that can rupture and prevent vocal performance," Massachusetts General Hospital said in a statement on Tuesday, released to People.

Although his surgery prevented him from attending Sunday night's Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, Smith delivered a hilarious Love Actually-esque video while remotely accepting one of his three wins.

More reason to celebrate: Smith turned 23 today and received an authentic Harry Potter wand as his gift. We can only assume the wand's magical powers will speed along his recovery.
