Celebrating and honoring Earth Day

It's Earth Day!

In 1970, 45 years ago, John McConnell created Earth Day. It started as a day to celebrate and honor peace and the environment. Earth Day also helped spawn the modern environmental movement, including big changes like the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act . Today, it is recognized in over 192 countries with over a billion people participating.

It turns out there are some things you can do on Earth Day, that don't require a small personal loan.

First, plant a garden. Besides all those plants sucking in our CO2 and kicking out life-giving oxygen, now you know where at least some of your food is coming from. And it doesn't matter if you plant an acre of okra or some or some oregano on your patio, this will save you money and make you a little healthier.

Second, throw a party. Besides being a great way to meet other people who love the earth, it's a great way to organize a group to make some changes in the community.

Third, change a habit. If you don't recycle, then start. Take shorter showers...take a reusable cup to Starbucks instead of using ANOTHER one from them. Small changes like these can add up to big changes when we all do them.

Fourth, if you can, donate some money to the Earth Day Network. You can do it online, quickly and easily at EarthDay.org – there's even a nifty button right on the homepage to help you out.
Those are some easy ways to help make the earth a better place, because remember, we don't own the planet, we're just leasing it.
