A Gallup poll looked at what attributes the highest performing individuals in companies have in common. The three key things that must exist are: tenure of a decade or more in the organization, being engaged in the work, and expectations of the job aligning well with one's talents.> Find a job in sports

> Find a job in administration
> Find a job in education

Each variable affects outcomes on its own, especially tenure. For example, years at a company can yield deep expertise, but it does not always correlate with great performance. After too many years at a company, many workers grow apathetic or become cynical from workplace disappointments over the years.

However, combining long tenure with the other two factors (engagement, along with clear workplace expectations that coincide with an employee's talents) is a winning combination for high performance. Unfortunately, in a typical company, this combination exists in just 5 percent of individual contributors.

So what can employers do to make sure more of their employees hold the trifecta of talent, engagement, and tenure? Gallup suggests using scientific predictive analytics to hire people with the right talents for their role. They also believe that pairing talented employees with great managers will help with engagement, and thus, retention. Ultimately it's about not viewing talent, engagement, and tenure as separate elements, but combining them together in a way that increases the likelihood of growing all three.
