2014's Most Popular Dog Breeds Ranked By American Kennel Club

The American Kennel Club reports that for the 24th year in a row, the Labrador retriever is the nation's top dog.

In doing so the breed bested its own record, which it set in 2013 by surpassing the poodle in popularity duration.

Club rankings were based on the number of dogs and puppies newly registered in 2014, and it turned out to be a good year for many breeds.

French bulldogs made a debut appearance in the top 10, landing the 9th spot, while regular bulldogs rose to their highest ranking to date, coming in at number 4.

German shepherds, golden retrievers, and Yorkshire terriers held steady, again coming in at 2nd, 3rd, and 6th respectively.

Falling a list placement were beagles, boxers and Rottweilers, while poodles gained one.

A number of other purebred pups were specifically noted for their meteoric rises in popularity over the past decade.

Among the biggest leaps upwards is that of the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, which has climbed nearly 40 spots since 2004.

Exactly how many members of each dog breed were registered in 2014 was not disclosed by the organization.

The top 10 breeds of 2014:

1. Labrador Retriever

2. German Shepherd Dog

3. Golden Retriever

4. Bulldog

5. Beagle

6. Yorkshire Terrier

7. Poodle

8. Boxer
