Autopsy results from the New York City medical examiner's office revealed that New York Times reporter David Carr died of complications from lung cancer.

The legendary journalist passed away unexpectedly Thursday night. He collapsed in the New York Times newsroom headquarters and was pronounced dead at the hospital. He was 58 years old.

Heart disease was also a contributing factor in his death, according to a spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner's office.

Carr was known for his candid personality and often times brutal honesty. He penned the Media Equation column for the Times, as well as a memoir titled "The Night of the Gun" about his fight with drug addiction.

Dean Baquet, the paper's executive editor called Carr "our biggest champion ... and his unending passion for journalism and for truth will be missed by his family at The Times, by his readers around the world and by people who love journalism."
