Is This The Greatest Love Letter Ever Written?

The Man in Black's single-page handwritten note to his wife on her 65th birthday reads, "We get old and get use to each other ... But once in awhile, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate and inspire me. You influence me for the better."

Johnny and June Carter Cash were married for 35 years -- their tumultuous and inspiring love affair immortalized in 2005's 'Walk The Line.'

The poll was carried out by life insurance company Beagle Street, in an effort to up the romance -- and perhaps insurance policies -- ahead of Valentines' Day.

Other love letters that made the list include Ernest Hemingway declaring his love for actress Marlene Dietrich, Richard Burton's letter telling Liz Taylor exactly how pretty she is, and poet John Keats telling his sweetheart in 1819, "You have absorb'd me."

Romantic notions overlooked by British voters? Lyndon Johnson's courtship letters to Lady Bird, and Amelia Earhart's anti-love letter to her future husband, declaring, "I shall not hold you to any midaevil (sic) code of faithfulness to me nor shall I consider myself bound to you similarly."

While the practice is going out of style, men won the prize for old-fashioned mush. One in four British men admitted to writing a love letter in the past year. Unfortunately, half the women surveyed called the practice "outdated."

Johnny Cash's letter read:

June 23 1994
Odense, Denmark.

Happy Birthday Princess,

We get old and get use to each other. We think alike. We read each others minds. We know what the other wants without asking. Sometimes we irritate each other a little bit. Maybe sometimes take each other for granted.

But once in awhile, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate and inspire me. You influence me for the better. You're the object of my desire, the #1 Earthly reason for my existence. I love you very much.

Happy Birthday Princess.

John
