Michigan 'walking man' gets big surprise

The Michigan man who walked 21 miles to work everyday got an unexpected gift.

James Robertson, 56, works a factory job in Detroit but doesn't own a car, instead he walks. Robertson makes the long trek every day just to get to work and then when he clocks out, he walks another 21 miles home.

He's been making that trip for 10 years, though he didn't always have to. He used to drive a 1988 Honda Accord until it broke down beyond repair. And on $10.55 an hour, he hasn't been able to afford a car since.

He told the Detroit Free Press, "It's extremely tiring, there's no question about it. But there's also the will to do it. By the time Friday comes, you are mentally and physically drained."

When people began hearing about his story, a GoFundMe campaign was set up to help him raise money for a car - people donated more than $320,000.

But when he went into a dealership to scope out some potential rides, he was presented with a brand new Ford Taurus. The surprise made him break down in tears.

"What do you think about being able to drive to work every day?"

"You know, that's a good question. every time I step into it, it will remind me of where I've been and where I'm going."

Now his days of walking to work are finally over. And even with the new car courtesy of Ford, Robertson will still get the money from his GoFundMe campaign to help with long term expenses.
