Newly-released Vine footage shows the moment a SpaceX rocket missed the barge it was intended to land on and exploded at impact.

The explosive crash happened last week, but SpaceX founder Elon Musk only made the video public on Friday.

Musk captioned the incredible footage "close, but no cigar."

The short six-second clip shows the massive Falcon 9 rocket hit the deck of the barge at an awkward angle before slamming onto down in a massive fireball.

In one of four stills tweeted by Musk, the founder calls the accident at a "Full RUD (rapid unscheduled disassembly) event" but declares "the ship is fine" and will need only "minor repairs."

He then gleefully calls the failure an "exciting day."

Musk claims the rocket's stabilizing fins ran out of hydraulic fuel, causing the fins to collapse and the rocket to fail.

Those fins are the crux of Musk's proposal that SpaceX rockets be multi-use. That and landing on the a small barge in the middle of an ocean, but that has already been done.
