Ashley Furniture Shells Out 1.5 Million to Customers For Sports Promotion

The brains over at Ashley Furniture HomeStore and Better Sleep Shops should probably stay away from sports betting this Super Bowl.

The furniture company owes over 1.5 million dollars in customer refunds over a ridiculous promotion they ran during the holidays.

Ashley & Better Sleep stores in Ohio and Kentucky agreed to refund customers who spent $1,999 or more on furniture, mattresses or accessories during December 17th thru December 30th if Ohio State beats Oregon and Alabama and wins the National Championship by at least 7 points.

Well, Go Buckeyes? They won.

Ohio State destroyed the Oregon Ducks in the big game winning 42 - 20 this week meaning Ashley & Better Sleep better pony up the dough.

Several hundred shoppers qualify for the promotion and ultimately the chain will have to pay out well over a million dollars.

One customer tweeted out: "Thanks for the free furniture"

Another said, "I'm about to be sleeping real good on my #freemattress"

Speaking with The Columbus Dispatch, Rob Klaben, the vice president of marketing and advertising for Ashley's parent company, says the idea came during a conference earlier this year when a Houston based store owner explained he'd done the same thing with the Super Bowl and ended up paying out 6 million in refunds.

Klaben also clarified where the money is coming from, telling ABC News, "We did work with a third-party company that underwrote the promotion. So we're excited to see a win."

With that said, he added, "It's not inexpensive to have this kind of promotion."
