Gina Rodriguez receives unexpected Best Actress Golden Globe

Updated

Gina Rodriguez, the star of CW's "Jane the Virgin," was up against megastars for the Best Actress in a TV Comedy or Musical: the nominees included Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lena Dunham, Taylor Schilling, and Edie Falco. It seemed like whoever set up the seating didn't think she had a very good chance of winning either: When Rodriguez's name was called, she had to walk ... and walk to get to the podium to accept the award. Once she got to the stage, though, she gave a truly memorable acceptance speech at the Golden Globes.

"Thank you God for making me an artist ... um ... [tears, gasps, applause] ... This award is so much more than myself, it represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes. My father used to tell me every day to say, 'Today's a great morning; I can and I will. Oh, Dad, today's a great morning -- I can, and I did."

She fought through tears to give the speech, and audiences seemed to be moved as well. Congratulations, Gina!
