Golden Globes 2015: The Biggest Snubs and Surprises!

With the Golden Globe nominations revealed on Thursday, the awards season race is heating up for 2014's big screen stars. Just one day after the Screen Actors Guild announced its contenders, awards front-runners are emerging while some hopefuls are falling behind. We're breaking down this year's Globes snubs and surprises and what it means for that little gold man at the end of the finish line.

PICS: And the Golden Globe Nominees Are...

First up, let's talk surprises.

Quevenzhane Wallis: The pint-sized actress may have scored an Oscar nom in 2013 for her breakout role in Beasts of the Southern Wild, but few expected to see the 11-year-old as a serious awards contender this year. Sure, she's got chops, but we were surprised that Sony's musical Annie gave her award-worthy material. (Also surprising: this marks Wallis' first Globes nom – she was not nominated for Beasts.)

Ava DuVernay: File this under delightful surprises! DuVernay's Selma not only scored a nomination for Best Drama, but the 42-year-old also becomes the first-ever African-American woman to be nominated in the Best Director category.

Julianne Moore: We all figured Julianne was a shoo-in for her role in Still Alice, but we were not expecting to see her as a double nominee. The actress also scored a nom this year for Maps to the Stars.

Mark Ruffalo and Bill Murray: No, we're not surprised to see their names as nominees – but just like Julianne, we were pleasantly surprised to see them as double-nominees this year. And while Julianne is doubly nominated in the film categories, Mark and Bill each have a foot in the TV and film camps. Mark is nominated for his work in The Normal Heart and Foxcatcher, while Bill is being honored for Olive Kitteridge and St. Vincent.

As for the snubs...

Channing Tatum: Sorry, Channing! Though his dramatic turn in Foxcatcherhad earned him no shortage of awards-season buzz, he failed to earn a nomination from the Screen Actors Guild or the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Though he's not officially out of the Oscar race, his chances don't seem likely.

Brangelina: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were both shut out of the Golden Globes this year. Angie's directorial debut Unbroken failed to score a single nom, while Brad's starring-vehicle Fury was also snubbed. (Still, don't count them out of the Oscars race just yet.)

Ben Affleck: He may have been snubbed from most acting snubs lists forArgo (when he was famously snubbed by Oscar for directing the thriller, he humorously told reporters: "I mean, I also didn't get the acting nomination, and no one's saying I got snubbed there!") we'll go ahead and give him the honor of an official snub mention this year. Ben's Gone Girl co-star Rosamund Pike earned a Globes nomination on Thursday, as did director David Fincher. As if adding insult to injury, Pike didn't once reference her on-screen husband in a statement about her nomination.

"It is as if a magic carpet picked me up last year and it is astonishing and exhilarating that it has taken me all the way here. I am nothing but grateful to have had the opportunity to dive into a role like this. All thanks really go to David Fincher for his guidance and for allowing me to play Gillian Flynn's incredible, confounding character. I'm very honored to be nominated alongside actresses I have long admired. Thank you so much to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for this nomination!"

For good measure: the nom that surprised no one.

Meryl Streep continues her streak as the queen of the Golden Globes. With her nod for Into the Woods, Streep's nomination tally rises to 29 – more than any other actor in history – while she remains the Globes' winningest actor with eight trophies.

NEWS: All Hail Meryl Streep!

The Golden Globes air live on Jan. 11 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC, withTina Fey and Amy Poehler returning for their third hosting stint. Days later, on Jan. 15, the Academy Awards nominees will be revealed. Who is your pick to win?
