For the zillionth public appearance in her "1989" publicity tour,Taylor Swift has popped up on the cover of Asos magazine, flexing her guns in a silver crop top/miniskirt combo. The styling isn't surprising - in fact, it couldn't be more on brand for the known midriff exhibitionist - but Swift does give us some insight into her fashion mindset in the accompanying interview, something she doesn't often get into since she's too busy answering questions about her love life.

Consistent with her ongoing investment in female friendships over romantic relationships, Swift says she's dressing for her BFFs these days.

"When I'm getting dressed, it's always based on what my friends will think. They are my number one priority and the opinions of girls are more important to me at this point in my life. But depending on the city I'm in and depending on the time of day and what mood I'm in, my choices are ever changing."

Although this does mean Swift is still catering to someone when she gets dressed in the morning, it may not be such a bad thing in the end. People like Lorde and Lena Dunham are inclined to push the envelope when it comes to personal styling (dip dyed fingers, green hair), and Karlie Kloss, while a normal dresser IRL, has a lot of experience with bizarro looks through her work as a model. After wearing that Mary Katrantzou bodysuit to the VMAs, we're hungry for more interesting looks from Swift.

Of course, the singer still has to maintain a more universally appealing image than any of her friends. But despite being thoroughly mainstream, she says she does try to avoid trends.

"I think that as much as you should be creative and experiment, there are certain things I know are fads and so I try to steer clear of most of the obvious ones. I play the tape of my life forward and don't wear the things that my kids or grandkids will make fun of me for wearing – [adopts sarcastic voice] 'Wow, cool, mom, cool cowboy boots thatyou were wearing constantly in 2006!'"
We know, we know: A wealth of evidence to the contrary lies in the Google Image search results for "Taylor Swift crop tops." But if you think about it, her trend transgressions really don't go past that.

At least not this year. We can't vouch for 2006.
